Norwegian massacre? Is Christianity responsible for the Holocaust because some Nazis used Christian doctrines to justify it? Is Christianity responsible for Apartheid in South Africa because one major church supported it? Is Christianity responsible for the Inquisition, Fascism, or Colonialization because they originated in Europe and some Christians supported them?

Islam is frequently misunderstood and may seem exotic in some parts of today's world. Perhaps this is because religion no longer dominates everyday life. The majority of average citizens know very little about Islam and, as per the Gallop poll January 2010, 63% of Americans are completely unaware of its existence. While knowledge is power, ignorance can render persons and communities vulnerable to misconceptions and errors.

The Supreme Court Judge Anthony Kennedy denounced, what he called, abysmal ignorance of Islam in 1998. He called on Americans to search for greater understanding of Muslims: "I hope that in the next century we will come to terms with our abysmal ignorance of the Muslim world. Muslims aren't a bunch of wackos and nuts. They are decent, brilliant, talented people with a great civilization and traditions of their own, including legal traditions. Americans know nothing about them. There are people in that part of the world with whom, we are simply out of touch. That's a great challenge for the next century.”

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are variations of the same basic religion. All believe in one God, Creator of the universe. All have a similar line of prophets. All recognize the traditions contained in the Book of Genesis and many stories of the Bible are mentioned in the Quran.  All acknowledge the Ten Commandments and honor Abraham’s faith. So what is the difference?

The so-called radical fundamentalists are not confined to a specific religion. They could be Jews, Christians, or Muslims. Their actions represent their egos, not their faith. Is American Judaism responsible for the 1994 Hebron massacre carried out by Baruch Goldstein? Is American Protestantism responsible for Timothy McVeigh who committed the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing of a federal building? Is European Christianity responsible for Anders Behring Breivik, the perpetrator of the 2011
